Build your very own wind-powered Strandbeest that moves only by the power of nature!
The Wind Walker, or Strandbeest, is a kinetic, wind-propelled sculpture that walks around leisurely, propelled naturally by the wind flowing through its turbines. Now students can build and enjoy their very own Strandbeest that glides gracefully across any flat surface without electricity or batteries. Wind alone will drive this “creature”, made of lightweight plastic tubes and wing-like propellers. Use a fan or blow air at your tabletop walker and watch it shuffle and side-step to the left!
The original Strandbeest was created by physicist/artist Theo Jansen, and was designed for the beach. Each leg segment uses Jansen’s Linkage in its construction, essentially a central crank that moves in circles, with only one degree of freedom to act within.
