Enchodus, also called the ‘Sabertooth of the Sea’ was a fearsome predator that lived 85 to 40 million years ago, from the Late Cretaceous to Early Paleogene periods. They may have reached up to 5 feet in length. One of the fish’s most notable attributes was the large elongated “fangs” at the front of the upper and lower jaws and on the palatine bones, sometimes reaching six inches! Specialized for impaling prey, these fangs reveal the creature’s evolutionary mastery in marine predation and positioned them as a formidable hunter.
